In all my years working at organizations, one thing was consistently true – if the right people were in the right roles, it was fun, passionate, on fire. But wrong people? Wrong roles? Forget it. As I deepened my work with people, I started to realize being on teams that were magic wasn’t an act of magic. It was deliberate. And it came back to investing in people. That is why I do this work, because I get to invest in people and be a small part of what makes going to work joyful. Because that is what working with good people feels like - pure joy. In my work, I tackle this through executive coaching, training and consulting. I do this independently, and also in collaboration with talented coaches, trainers, instructional designers, and consultants for work with larger clients. My work is standard, customizable, short term, long term, fun and serious, all at the same time.
Grounded in The Hudson Institute’s coaching methodology, informed by my years working with and managing people and peppered with the latest writings on people and change, my coaching work is a dedicated to being your partner in your development. My clients are leaders in their companies and while each client is unique, they all share a hunger to get better: better at their job, get a better job, better at their balance, get to know themselves better, etc.
We are, even at work, whole people. Our coaching work will focus on you as a whole person, all in service of you reaching your goals. While each engagement will be specific to you, it will follow a pattern (following an introductory chemistry call):
- Goal setting/understanding current state
- Exploring barriers, discovering strengths, breaking and building habits
- Implementing and maintaining change
Engagements often include stakeholder interviews or assessments, and can include anecdotal information from your work life (performance reviews, etc) as you see fit. Engagements that are sponsored by companies will include conversations with managers and/or HR partners.
While the bulk of growth and development happens on the job, there are skills that are best honed in a training environment. My trainings focus on relationship skills – those skills that ensure that you won’t be making widgets for the rest of your life. My work with training happens in two ways: delivery of a standard training program or the design of a customizable program to fit your needs. Most of my training work is in partnership with PRI Leadership (see more here). Training programs include (but are not limited to): presentation skills, feedback, difficult conversations, delegation, strategic planning, communication, new managers course, and new directors course.
Some of my favorite training to do marries coaching and training. Team effectiveness work is a great example of that and usually includes some training about how to build and maintain high performing teams, and some coaching to understand individual and team strengths and to understand growth areas.
This work is different than coaching and training, and taps more directly into work that I loved doing while I was inside organizations. One of my favorite jobs was being a chief of staff. A true jack of all trades. This area of my work is very specific to the needs of the client but often includes change management, talent and people (performance management, hiring, onboarding), organizational design, strategic planning or fundraising. My work focuses on whatever high level problem, project or gap exists for the client but where there isn’t anyone available with the skill or time to do it.
